What should you do at the end of the day? When work is done and it is time to chill. I bet you would lay in your cozy bed and rest your head. Why not put on a film that gives you a thrill? It’s a story of witchcraft but not the way it seems. This story of two sisters will make you think. A cool Fall night needs some Practical Magic
Practical Magic
The story is set in a small New England town and tells the story of two witch sisters forced to live at their aunts’ house after a tragic event strikes the siblings. At their Aunt Frances and Aunt Jet’s house. The Sisters Sally and Gillian were informed of the family curse and were taught magic. Growing up in the small town the sisters faced cruelty from the kids there causing Sally to want to be a “normal” kid.
Gillian runs away from home in the middle of the night as the sisters grow up. Leaving Sally behind. Additionally, both sisters are connected spiritually and sense when the other is in danger. Along the way in Gillian’s life, she encounters a man who would end up being the antagonist of the movie. Gillian encountering this man caused the two to reunite to banish him from their lives to protect their family. Leading curious policemen toward their paths, and a jail cell waiting to be occupied.
Opinion
I rate this movie 10/10, I loved everything about it. The town it takes place in has perfect Autumn vibes. This is the perfect movie to watch on a cool Fall night with your family or loved ones. The story is not a basic retailing of wicked witches. This movie humanizes witches and portrays them in a different light than what we usually are shown. I recommend watching this movie 100%. The acting in the movie was spot on where I would catch myself smiling at the screen. Watching this movie fills you with good fall vibes that warm you from the inside out. This is a new comfort movie for me.
If you’re in the mood to watch a Halloween movie without the spooks watch this. People of any age can watch this film and genuinely enjoy it. Practical Magic sticks to its PG-13 rating which makes this a good family movie to watch. Rotten Tomatoes rated the movie a 25% deeming it as bad. I do not agree with their rating whatsoever. The people behind Rotten Tomatoes need a lobotomy because I don’t know what their issue is. Practical Magic displays themes of Family, friendship, and love. How can you hate that? IMDb rates the movie a 6.5, I don’t understand why this film received such “okay” ratings. Practical Magic is a cult film that gained a following through the years. I give it 10 stars.
Rotten Tomatoes Review
As we know, Rotten Tomatoes rated the movie 25% for absurd reasons. Jay Borar said, “Practical Magic, in other words, is anything but magical. The only spell it casts will put you right to sleep.” He is a top critic but writes reviews with very little detail. Practical Magic isn’t supposed to be your basic witch movie; it humanizes witches and puts them in real-life situations.
The spell Borar talks about is the Belladonna which the sisters use to set the antagonist to sleep when he has them captive. The critic is wrong though, Sally created a spell to make her dream man. The sisters both used a spell to bring back an individual from the dead as well. Multiple spells were used in the film. Like I said this film isn’t centered around witchcraft. Yes, it is mentioned in the film but it isn’t the main focus. Sally being the main character wants to be normal hence why there was barely any magic.
Casting reaction
Released in 1998, Practical Magic contains a very highly profiled cast in my opinion. The lead roles played by Sandra Bullock as Sally Owens and Nicole Kidman as Gillian Owens. Sandra Bullock has 30 acting awards under her belt, those being an Academy Award and many MTV awards. Nicole Kidman has 43 awards as well, some being Golden Globes, MTV, Cannes, and Glamour awards. That’s not it, Aunt Frances played by Stockard Channing. Better known for her role as Rizzo in Grease. Channing has 11 awards to her name like the Primetime and Tony award. Dianne West played Aunt Jet and has 13 awards including the Academy, Primetime, and Golden Globe awards. Dianne West is known for her roles in iconic movies like Footloose, The Lost Boys, and Edward Scissorhands.
Derogatory
Fortunately, in the movie, there were no sex scenes, however, there were some sexual references. Along with a little violence, light swearing, and alcohol usage.
